My Lithgow .303
|
Across the top of barrel: Parker-Hale Ltd. Birmingham, England Right side above trigger: ENGLAND MA/51 Left side above trigger: M^ LITHGOW SMLE 1940 The head stamp info on the ammunition that came with it states .303 British and has a 5 rnd..mag. These pictures I took when I got the rifle, there was quite a bit of rust around the chamber area, dust and dirt in the mag. well and the recoil pad was deteriorated to a hard brittle mass of rubber. The leather sling fell apart and into little pieces. Click on images for full sized. |

I was able to research and get this much together. I have never owned an 'Enfield' or similar vintage rifle so I managed to do some research via the internet and my gunsmith. Any further info regarding this rifle would be greatly appreciated. The 'MA/51' markings are an Australian Inspection Stamp and means the 'sporterized' conversion was done sometime after 1951. The rifle is a No. 1 Mk III Lithgow switched to a MK III in 1941 "This rifle was
originally made at Lithgow, NSW, Australia in 1940. It served with
Australian forces during WW2 and was sent back to Lithgow for FTR
(factory thorough repair) in 1951. The D^D markings are an Aussie
military acceptance marking. MA is the factory code for the Lithgow
plant proper. There were several feeder plants and in late '41,
production was moved to Orange (OA) for the duration of the war. Any other info anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Please use this link

After taking it to a gunsmith and getting it checked out for function/ headspace etc. I worked on cleaning it up and replaced the Parker-Hale recoil pad with a nice new one by Uncle Mike's' |

Finally got the rifle scoped. After searching high and low on the internet and other places, I found I could not avoid getting a scope mount that didn't require a gunsmith. I finally settled on a local gunsmith called "Bits of Pieces" who created a mount for my rifle. He made the mount, mounted the scope and bore-sighted it for just over $150CAD. Needless to say I am very pleased with the results and can't wait to get out to the range. click and image to enlarge |

Someone requested close-ups of the scope mount, so here they are! Click to enlarge. You will see a small 'block' which the left side of the Weaver rail sits on, that is attached to the remnants of the charging bridge. |
