| Special Purpose Insertion and Extraction This is a bunch of Marines "hanging" under a CH-46. This is called Special Purpose Insertion and Extraction (SPIE) Rigging. This is used for quickly inserting and extracting Marines.

| SPIE Rigging This is what is looks like when your tied into the SPIE line and being lifted up off the ground. My left boot is visible in lower left corner of picture.

| SPIE Rigging And this....is what it looks like as you're flying around, looking up at the "bird". We keep our arms outstretched as we fly which prevents us from spinning around on the line and making us dizzy and sick....imagine blowing chunks at 1000-1500' and 30 knots, while spinning like a top? ......Not Pretty...

| Los Flores, 41 Area, MCB Camp Pendleton This is the home of 1st LAI Bn. The large area is the ramp where we park the LAVs. The lower right corner shows the new Armory and in the upper right area is the barracks. The upper most of the three barracks is the home of 1st Force Reconnaissance Company.

| Huey Cobra AH-1 This picture I took at the El Toro Air Show in '92, while we where doing a static display with the LAV's. Several times during the Gulf War did Cobras and Harriers help my unit out of a jamb...We sure felt good knowing that they were "on station".

| Patches... The patch on the left is a patch I found at Kuwait International Airport. I believe it is a keepsake type civilian patch, a touristy thing. The desert cammo American Flag I had sewn onto damn near everything I owned.

| Hunting License.... While on a maintenance stand down one day we were greeted by several former 1st LAI Bn. Marines who were currently serving with 3rd MAR DIV. They had the foresight to make up these hunting licenses prior to their deployment. Whew, we sure were glad we received them in time...we were worried about the Game Warden busting us for hunting without a license......and besides, how could you possibly turn down the offer of free ammo?? |
